Pitch similarity in the vicinity of backchannels

چکیده
Dynamic modeling of spoken dialogue seeks to capture how interlocutors change their speech over the course of a conversation. Much work has focused on how speakers adapt or entrain to different aspects of one another’s speaking style. In this paper we focus on local aspects of this adaptation. We investigate the relationship between backchannels and the interlocutor utterances that precede them with respect to pitch. We demonstrate that the pitch of backchannels is more similar to the immediately preceding utterance than nonbackchannels. This inter-speaker pitch relationship captures the same distinctions as more cumbersome intra-speaker relations, and supports the intuition that, in terms of pitch, such similarity may be one of the mechanisms by which backchannels are rendered ’unobtrusive’.

Melodic characteristics of backchannels in Dutch map task dialogues
In natural conversation backchannels (short optional utterances like ‘uh-huh’ or ‘yes’) are used to indicate to the current speaker that the current listener understands so far and that the speaker may continue. The question posed in the present paper is whether backchannels distinguish themselves melodically from lexically identical utterances that have a different function (e.g., the answer t...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Backchannels in American English
We examine prosodic and contextual factors characterizing the backchannel function of single affirmative words. Data is drawn from collaborative task-oriented dialogues between speakers of Standard American English. Despite high lexical variability, backchannels are prosodically well defined: they have higher pitch and intensity and greater pitch slope than affirmative words expressing other pr...
متن کاملToward Adaptive Generation of Backchannels for Attentive Listening Agents
Backchannels play an important role in spoken dialogue, especially in attentive listening such as counseling. Appropriately coordinated backchannels help establish rapport in that kind of dialogue. We investigate whether and how synchrony is expressed by the prosodic features of backchannels with respect to the preceding speaker’s utterances. By analyzing counseling dialogue, we find out correl...
متن کاملClassification of Iranian Traditional Music Dastgahs Using Features Based on Pitch Frequency
The Iranian traditional music is composed of seven majors Dastgahs: Chahargah, Homayoun, Mahour, Segah, Shour, Nava, and Rast-Panjgah. In this paper, a new algorithm for the classification of the Iranian traditional music Dastgahs based on pitch frequency is proposed. In this algorithm, the features of Lagrange coefficients of pitch logarithm (LCPL), Fuzzy similarity sets type 2 (FSST2), and th...
متن کاملMinor sounds of major importance - prosodic manipulation of synthetic backchannels in Swedish
Prosody plays a big role in the human speech and is used for expressing emotions and attitudes in addition to the lexical words. This study looks at the possibility to use prosody in expressing attitudes with backchannels, such as /oh/, /m/, /uhu/ etc. In the study, two monosyllabic backchannels, /a/ and /m/, were chosen, created synthetically and manipulated systematically with regards to the ...
